How to Make Your Home Safe for Aging

Posted on: May 11th, 2017 by CarePro Blogger

More Americans than ever are choosing to age in-home.  At CarePro Home Medical, we offer some tips and tricks on how to make your home safe for aging while continuing to be independent.

Bathroom

Your bathroom can be a very dangerous place because there are so many opportunities to fall.  Place adhesive strips or a non-slip mat down to prevent slips and trips.  Installing a grab bar will ensure you have something to grab other than an unstable towel rack if you do start to fall.  A shower chair is also a great amenity to have because it can help you remain stable if mobility is an issue.

Stairs

You’d prefer to live in your home as long as possible, but when you need to go up and down stairs, that wish can become harder.  By installing a stair lift, you will able to stay in your home knowing you are safe from a fall occurring on the stairs.  This is a practical and affordable way to stay safe when your mobility changes.

Kitchen

As you age, you may become forgetful, so it’s important to set a timer when cooking a meal so that you can prevent fires.  While cooking, use pots with two handles.  This can help distribute the weight and keep you from dropping it.  Buying appliances like toasters and coffee makers that automatically turn off are also a good investment as you age.

Bedroom

Avoid bedspreads and sheets that go to the floor to avoid feet getting tangled.  Nightstands should be sturdy to support your weight if you need assistance getting out of bed.  Make sure the bed is the appropriate height because beds that are too high or too low can cause you to fall. The Disability Rights Education and Defense Fund recommends beds should be 20 to 23 inches high from the floor to the top of the mattress.  Also, place a sturdy chair in the bedroom to sit in while getting dressed.  You can place nightlights in areas where you will be walking at night such as the path to the bathroom.

With these tips, you will be able to stay self-sufficient and independent in your own home safely.  If you have any questions about other safety tips or products we offer, contact us today!  At CarePro Home Medical, we are dedicated to providing the best services and products to keep you and your family healthy.
