What is a lift chair?
A lift chair is a special recliner that is built to help people move easily from a sitting to a standing position. It can be used to lean back or to raise your feet with a footrest, just like a regular recliner. A lift chair is operated with the push of a button. It comes with a built-in mechanism to lift the seat up from a horizontal position to an angle, which helps you get in and out of the chair easier.
Who should use a lift chair?
Lift chairs are ideal for people who have trouble standing or sitting down because of pain, decreased balance or decreased strength and endurance. However, the chair looks just like a regular recliner, so guests and family members can sit in it without noticing any difference.
If you have trouble getting in and out of bed, you may find that a lift chair is an easier alternative for taking naps or occasionally sleeping through the night. However, you should be aware that extended use of any chair as a bed can result in bed sores or other discomforts because a chair limits your ability to move and roll around in your sleep.
Who should NOT use a lift chair?
If you don’t experience pain, imbalance or weakness upon sitting or standing, a lift chair may not be right for you. It’s important as you age to continue using your muscles as much as possible to maintain your strength and agility. In other words, if you don’t need the added assistance to sit or stand, you should probably not purchase a lift chair for that purpose.
