Vitamin D

Vitamin D can help your family avoid nasty respiratory ailments this winter.

It’s that time of year again…one trip to the grocery store could lead to a cold and flu outbreak for your whole family (not to mention your co-workers and your kids’ classmates!).  Getting sick is part of the territory each winter for many Iowans- but it doesn’t have to be with a little help from Vitamin D!

Research shows that Vitamin D supplements may cut your risk for acute respiratory tract infections (like chest colds or the flu) by as much as 40%!   Vitamin D is well known as a supplement for supporting healthy bones and muscles; however, the “sunshine vitamin” is actually necessary for total body health.   We absorb Vitamin D in small amounts through our skin by daily exposure to sunlight.  In Iowa, though, we make no Vitamin D in our skin from November to March, which makes supplementing essential.

If you or your children tend to develop chest colds, the flu or other respiratory ailments during the winter, consider upping your Vitamin D intake.  The amount of Vitamin D you need depends on many factors, including your weight, age and the color of your skin.  Consult with one of CarePro’s knowledgeable pharmacists about the variety of supplements we offer, and how you can benefit from Vitamin D this winter.
