Tips for ostomy patients

CarePro Home Medical invites you to join them for their Ostomy Education Day at both their Cedar Rapids and Coralville locations. Learn valuable tips and have questions answered in Coralville from 9 to 11 a.m., and in Cedar Rapids from 1 to 4 p.m.

Sandy Rohr, RN, BSN, CWON, CCCN, is CarePro’s certified ostomy nurse. For those who can’t make it to the Ostomy Education Day, here are a few tips she suggests for living with an ostomy:

Tip 1: For new ostomy patients with a mid-line incision, place the wafer in a diamond shape rather than a square. This may offer more coverage and help hold the pouch in place.

Tip 2: Keep your pouching routine simple. Use only the products you need. If you start out simple, it is easy to add the products later as situations arise. It also helps your WOC nurse know what may be causing the problem. I teach that less is better, and then learn what the other products and accessories are, so you can be in control.

Tip 3: Do you ever find yourself making statements like these? Like: “Please don’t let my pouch leak.” Or “Please don’t let my pouch let odor out or puff up so it’s visible underneath my clothing.” Don’t let these keep bothering you! See a WOC nurse, and come to the Ostomy Education Day! Let us help!

Tip 4: Body images can change for ostomy patients, but there are wonderful products made just for you. Ask at the Ostomy Education Day or call your WOC nurse. They can help find you what you need to become comfortable with your body once again.
